PHILIPPINES

Mart climbs new highs, PSEi @ 8,999: Mart returned to flirting with the 9,000 level, finishing at record-breaking 8,999.17, with all counters in the green, led by Mining and Oil (+4.00%), and Holdings (+1.33%). Among actively traded shares were: ALI (+P0.75 at P47.00), BLOOM (+P0.96 at P12.82), NOW (+P0.29 at P5.60), BDO (-P0.90 at P157.00), and SMPH (-P0.40 at P38.50),on 8.88bn turnover. Gainers outpaced losers, 116-105, with net foreign inflows at P119.62mn.

Might test 9,000: Mart might test the 9,000 mark ahead of the FOMC Statement next week with expectations that status quo will be maintained, though profit-taking might weigh the benchmark down until there are clearer indications that the bullishness is warranted. Immediate support 8,900, resistance 9,020.

ASIA

Shares slide: Asian shares slid back Thursday following the fall of the U.S. dollar, pressuring export-reliant companies, particularly in Japan.

WALL STREET

Shares rallied: President Trump’s support for a strong dollar prompted US equities to pare earlier gains, even as US Treasury Chief Mnuchin favored a weaker currency. DJIA +105pts, 26,357 (+0.4%); Nasdaq Comp. -11pts, 7,403 (-0.15%).

COMMODITIES

Oil retreats: Oil slightly retreated on Thursday despite a weaker U.S. dollar, with global benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) shedding $0.38 to $65.23/barrel.

The blueprint will include commitments on the environment, social & governance. BDO to deactivate old ATMs after its transition to EMV technology:

BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) will deactivate old ATMs starting Feb. as it switches to the Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) technology. The move will enhance ATM security.

EW to issue P15bn worth of LTNCTD pending shareholders' approval:

East West Banking Corporation (EW) will have shareholders approve the issuance of P15bn worth of Long-Term Negotiable Certificates of Time Deposits (LTNCTDs) to diversify the bank’s funding sources. Terms will be announced later.

CHIB confirms issuance of 1.13mn shares to CBC Employees Retirement Plan:

China Banking Corp. (CHIB) confirmed the issuance of 1.13mn shares to CBC Employees Retirement Plan, as part of the bank’s increase in capital stock from P25bn to P33bn. The subscription price was P33.40 based on 20 Oct. 2017 closing.

AP appeals to gov't to resolve gridlock with ERC:

Aboitiz Power Corp. (AP) appealed to the Palace to resolve the gridlock with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). AP said plans that are already on commissioning & testing phases include 400MW Pagilao in Quezon; 340MW Toledo plant in Cebu; 68.8MW Manolo Fortich hydro project in Bukidnon.

NOW confirms consortium with G. Telecoms, Inc. for bidding for the 3rd major player slot:

Now Corp. (NOW) confirmed the statement given by their Bus. Dev. Head, Kristian Pura, that they are forming a consortium with privately-held satellite broadband operator G. Telecoms for the bidding for the slot of a 3rd major player. NOW will wait for the terms of reference & is in talks with foreign & local firms.

TECH denies it would take MultiPay public at a future time:

Cirtek Holdings Philippines Corp. (TECH) denied it would take MultiPay public at a future time, contrary to earlier reports.

Around 50% duty on imported rice is eyed as legislators finalize changes to the Agricultural Tariffication Act. Sen. Cynthia Villar said it might be 35% for ASEAN & 50% outside & they aim to finish this by May. The removal of the quantitative restriction (QR) will provide gov’t. P25bn in revenues.

DENR to consult with MICC to lift mining ban this 2018:

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) plans consulting with the interagency Mining Industry Coordinating Council (MICC) to finally resolve the issues surrounding Executive Order 79, which enforced a moratorium on new mining contracts. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the DENR wants the moratorium to be lifted this year as it sees a relatively stronger 2018 with more investment opportunities and better production in the sector.
